For many years, clients have asked me, “What makes you a good therapist?” In reflecting on this question, there are two answers: the short and the long.

The short answer is that I sit with my clients, offering a combination of empathy, expertise, and guidance so they feel understood, supported, safe, and empowered on their journey to cultivate their strongest sense of self.

The long answer is more complex and nuanced, shaped by the depth of the therapeutic relationship. To explain further, I often see myself as a human mirror. Instead of just showing you the surface-level stuff, like messy hair, I reflect back the things you’ve been overlooking—the neglected, forgotten, or under-appreciated parts of yourself. I help you see the beauty in your whole self, not just the parts you’re used to focusing on.

I like to think of myself as an intelligent, “professional” friend—one who doesn’t tell you what to do but somehow helps you realize, “Wow, I figured that out on my own!” Therapist’s secret- That moment is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. 

I’m also someone who can offer tough truths, but in a way that feels like handing you a warm cup of tea, not a slap in the face. And yes, I might throw in a joke here and there—because healing doesn’t always have to be about tears and tissues. Sometimes, it’s about laughter, awkward silences, and finding lightness in the process.
